Religion and Its Impact on Society

Religion and Its Impact on Society

According to Karl Marx "Religion is the Opium of Masses".

Impact of religion on Indian society has been multi-modal and multi-dimensional. Religion is defined as a specific set of fundamental beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by number of person or sects.
According to Article 25 of Indian constitution: everyone has the right to choose the belief and religious practices which he want to follow and it is also well enshrine in our constitution in too.

Impact of religion on society:-

(A)Negative impact of religion:-

1. Groupism: Religion divides people and in turn, may hamper development of India.

2. Conflicts: Communal conflicts became a common phenomenon as seen in Cow vigilantism, conflicts on religious books and symbols etc.

3. Dogmatism: Every religion has a set of beliefs which may be superstitious quite often. Such ideas block the development of society and the progress of individuals. E.g.: —In some communities there is no improvement the status of women on account of religious attitudes.

4.Blocks Social Development: In every religion there are some people having orthodox thinking and ideology who don’t want to change with the modern day world and creates hindrance and hampers the growth of the country.

(B)Positive impact of religion on society:-

Mahatma Gandhi  has said rightly said "Essence of all religion is same ,only their approach is different".
India is a land of religious diversities. All the major religions of the world, viz.: Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, Buddhism and Jainism are found in India. The institution of religion has its own positive impact on Indian society which can be summarised as follows:

1. Solidarity: People belonging to a particular religion closely identify themselves with the religious group. Every religion promotes solidarity and harmony in the society.

2. Ethical values: Religion helps in the development of ethical values, e.g.: Respect elders, Care for the parents, protection of children, helping the poor and disabled , honesty are certain values, preached by religion.

3. Social control: As we know there is no society without laws. Religion has also established a set of undefined laws which help in the smooth functioning of the society e.g. helping the people in need, donate if possible etc.

The deep sense of community that one finds in religion is difficult to find anywhere else. People really believe and see other as their own family members and try to help them in every way possible.

So we can conclude that the positives ultimately outweigh the negatives. It is not possible to have a society without a system of religion. It has become a part and parcel of an individual’s life.
However, most of these effects, whether positive or negative, are not directly caused by religion. Rather, they are caused by how people choose to use religion. What matters is not how religious or nonreligious you are; what matters is how you choose to make use of your religious views, whatever they may be.
